Essential Oils: A natural medicine

The busy schedule of our lives has taken a toll on our physical and mental well-being. Given the urban lifestyles, contact with nature has been reduced to zilch resulting in all kinds of ailments and anxieties. When we talk of advancement, there is no dearth of treatments offered by the developed medical sciences but as they say, nature is still the best medicine. Natural treatments like use of herbs and essential oils can provide holistic healing and nourishment better than the man made treatments.

Aromatherapy is one such branch of naturopathy relying on treatment through the use of Essential oils. From treating skin ailments to depression, these oils are said to cure many health conditions. The most common method of using essential oils is through massaging on the skin or inhalation of vapors.

Essential oils have antimicrobial properties which help in fighting infections and other skin ailments. Usually the application of oils is prescribed on the affected part of the skin, for instance the application of Tea tree oil is considered beneficial for acne prone skin. It has been researched that lemongrass oil and allspice oil have strong anti-viral properties too!

As for psychological disorders, a special branch of Aromatherapy involving use of fragrance for alleviation of anxiety is prescribed. The benefits of aromatherapy are tried and tested and also evident in our everyday lives. Any fragrant flower or fruit provides temporary relief from nervousness, because fragrant compounds have a direct effect on the brain. Essential oils come in variegated fragrances: rosemary, peppermint, lavender among others. Through the use of aromas of these oils the patient is provided a temporary relief from the strangulating strongholds of headache, depression and even insomnia! However, essential oils are not recommended for patients of highly escalated psychological distortions.

The best part of using essential oils for treatments and cures is that there are no side effects associated with them. The important thing to know is that every essential oil has its own, specific medicinal property and should be used for the conditions it is best suited for and that too in an appropriate amount. So, stay happy and healthy with the help of these age old, trusted carriers of wholesomeness and magic!
